Advice
and diet
Diet
When your kitten leaves our home she will be
on three meals a day, with dry food (IAMs is recommended)
available at all times. You will need to cut back to two
meals when she is about five months old, with dry food available
and reduce to one meal in the evening when fully grown (around 9
months). There are many products similar to IAMs on the market, all
are suitable and it is advisable to switch from time to time to
prevent boredom. All kittens vary in the amount they eat so meal sizes
must be gauged by trial and error. Fresh water should be available
at all times.
Most cat food in jelly such as kit-e-kat is
fine for meals It is important to feed a healthy
varied diet to your cat, this can be achieved by including cooked
chicken with no bones and cooked fish.
Do not give your kitten milk as they
cannot digest the lactose and it will act as a powerful laxative!!!
Please remember not to site her food near the litter tray as cats are
very fastidious and may refuse to eat all together.
Worming
Kittens and cats should be routinely treated
for roundworms twice a year.
Tapeworms are rarely a problem in kittens
unless there has been a flea infestation. Treat accordingly where
necessary with wormers supplied by your vet. Your
Applegarth kitten will have been treated for roundworms before you
collect her.
Fleas
Fleas are easier to control these days with
brilliant products such as 'Frontline', for your cat and 'Acclaim'
which is a spray for the house. Treatments can be bought in pet
stores but the most effective flea treatments are available only from
your vet.
Vaccinations
When your kitten leaves Applegarth she has
been vaccinated against Flu and Enteritis. It is vital to get these
boosted every year. You may wish to vaccinate against Leukaemia and
Chlamydia too. Your vet can advise you.
Safety Precautions
Basically, observe the rules
that you would with a young child. Here are some basic
precautions :
Always remember your cat
can squeeze into miniscule gaps.
Toilet lids should be kept down
and washing machines should be checked before
starting a program.
Do not use Dettol or the like
near your cat as these are toxic to felines. Savalon is a safe
disinfectant.
Finally we hope you
get many years of pleasure from your Bengal.
